A #ScienceHearted farewell.

Saying goodbye is never easy. It’s even harder when the people and the industry you have to say goodbye to mean so much to you. As I get ready to retire, it’s amazing to look back on my time at ARM & HAMMER™ and my time in the industry and see how much we have accomplished. You remember the people and the process, the funny times, and the frustrating times.  In the lab, we can now accomplish in a day what used to take a year and a half to achieve!

My main professor always said, “Take a look at what you did during your time in the lab and think about how that will look to someone 20, 30 or 40 years down the road.” It forces you to think about the leaps and bounds our industry has made and all the incredible solutions that will be discovered after our time is done.

During my time in the industry, I feel fortunate to have been able to play a role in pioneering the applications of Microbial Terroir™ - the idea of customized microbial solutions in livestock production and streamlining the Microbial Terroir process at ARM & HAMMER. Being able to bring to market one of the first high-throughput molecular microbial ecology platforms for the development of customized probiotics for the livestock industry has been one of my most impactful work in my career. It’s incredible to think about what my former students and colleagues and those in the next generation will be able to accomplish throughout their careers as well.

Although most of my work was done in the lab, I always enjoyed visiting with our customers on their dairy farms or swine and poultry operations. I encourage all those in similar roles to get out and visit the farms, see where our work in the lab really plays out and meet the people who we impact.

There’s one word that can sum up my time at ARM & HAMMER—#ScienceHearted. The word #ScienceHearted perfectly embodies what I love about ARM & HAMMER. You get to work with good colleagues who hold those same values and come to work every day ready to face and solve challenges. That’s what makes it fun and successful at the same time. That’s what I’m going to miss the most—the day-to-day of solving important problems with my team.
